“I’m strongly supporting it as Wales’ entry in the European Tree of the Year Award because it symbolises just how important even individual trees can be local communities across Wales and indeed the world.
“It was so important to the people of Llanfyllin that, when it blew down, they came together to try and save it, a lesson to us all.”
– Iolo Williams, Welsh Nature Observer
“The Lonely Tree, Wales’ favourite of our many ancient trees, has been a loved landmark for centuries. Such old trees remember us and our ancestors in every growth-ring. They heard our secrets, trysts and treacheries, witnessed history, marked the travellor’s way home.”
– Gillian Clarke, Wales’s National Poet
Llanfyllin’s Lonely Tree won Welsh Tree of the Year 2014 and has been put forward as Wales’s entry into the European Tree of the Year 2015 competition.

VISITING THE TREE
The tree is accessible via a nearby footpath. The path can be muddy and is quite steep in parts.
The footpath can be reached from Derwlwyn Lane (also known as Delwyn Lane) on the outskirts of Llanfyllin.
Following Delwyn Lane takes you over the old railway bridge, a bridge over the Cain river, past a sharp turn to the left and then a cattle grid. Shortly after you pass the sewage works, there’s a small stream coming off the hillside, just after this, turn northwards (left) and follow the track uphill.
You’ll pass a small spring (Jack Saddler’s Well) on your left that streams along the path and then there’s a wide up-sloping valley. Aim for the signpost at the top. Once you’re at the crest, look for the path leading right. The tree is about 100 yards south-west from this point.
Please be aware that although most of the walk up is a public footpath, the tree itself and the path leading to it is on private land. The Lewis family have kindly allowed access to the tree. Also sheep graze on the site, so please keep dogs under control.
