Gwenllian Beatt, only daughter of Nicholas Bennett and Violet Hilda Edwards of Weanllys, Llanfyllin, Powys passed away peacefully on Christmas Day.
Gwenllian was born and brought up in Llanfyllin, attending the local school and was a regular attendee at St Myllins Church where her Father was Organist and Choir Master for 56 years, starting aged 14 in 1883. Her Mother Violet taught in the local school.
A plaque commemorating Nicholas Bennett’s long service to the church was attached to the organ in 1978He also fulfilled the role of Town clerk and Registrar from 1916 until his retirement in 1942
Gwenllian had a happy childhood and throughout her whole life she always referred to Llanfyllin as Home.
On achieving adulthood Gwenllian left Llanfyllin and went to Manchester to train in Nursing and worked for the Red Cross during the war years. She was billeted at Gregynog House at Tregynon near Newtown which was then commandeered as a military hospital. A young soldier, George Albert Beatt, admitted with severe pneumonia caught her attention and whilst treating him she fell in love and subsequently married him. After the war they moved to Wimbledon, London where their daughter Judith was born in 1946. Gwenllian now trained in Chiropody, a profession which would serve her well throughout her working life. Soon after the birth of Judith the family decided on a new start and moved to Dorchester in Dorset. Gwenllian’s parents moved with them for the rest of their days. Her father died in 1951 and her Mother in 1977 and both were laid to rest in Dorset.
Gwenllian started her own successful chiropody practice and George worked as a travelling salesman for a while before starting with a local furniture and removals company, eventually rising to store manager of the Furniture and hardware shop. He took particular delight in the wheeling and dealing of the second–hand department.
In 1959 a son, Patrick was born and subsequently two Grandchildren, Kate in 1988 and James in 1993.
In retirement George and Gwen travelled extensively including visiting family in Australia. They returned many times to the Llanfyllin area researching the family history. George died in 2001 and Judith very sadly passed away in 2014. Gwenllian is survived by her son, Patrick and her Grandchildren Kate and James.
She will be greatly missed.
