When Joseph Jones was born at the Goat Inn (now the Cain Valley Hotel) in Llanfyllin in 1786, George III was king and the French Revolution was 3 years away. Momentous changes were coming which would alter the old ways for ever and propel Joseph into modernity. He would outlive Prince Albert and die in 1863 just before the Cambrian Railway finally linked Llanfyllin to the exciting and restless wider world.
Joseph has generously left a well documented trail of his progress, his triumphs and his disasters, which gives a rare insight into this amazing time, and of course includes a collision with that great 19th century innovation, the Llanfyllin Workhouse!
Oswestry historian Heather Hidden will tell the story of Joseph Jones at the Llanfyllin Institute at 7.30pm on Wed March 12th. All welcome! Llanfyllin & District Civic Society.
Free to members of the Llanfyllin Society. £2 for non-members.
